Day 6 - Saturday 14.06.25: It was another interesting trip to the mini-market….!

Today we’re going to throw caution to the wind and do things differently, you know, break the routine that we have acquired since we arrived. So exciting was the prospect that Maice even broke a glass in celebration…..actually what really happened was that she was clearing away the breakfast dishes from the balcony when one of the glasses fell off the chopping board and smashed into smithereens, honestly there seemed to be a million pieces scattered all over the bedroom floor. Of course we didn’t have a dustpan and brush so we very careful scraped it all into a pile using serviettes and a box of tissues, with Maice very carefully scooping it all up into a bag with a piece of cardboard and then wiping the floor with wet serviettes.
Now, it may come as a bit of a shock, it was to us when we discussed it but we are going to forgo our frappes at the Remetzo bar overlooking Rock and instead we’re going to have them down at the beach on our sun-beds. Admittedly the frappes weren’t a patch on the ones from Remetzo, not only were they more expensive, they were served in clear plastic take-away cups, and we didn’t get a glass of water with it! Back to Remetzos it is then. For our lunch we purchased one doughnut to share and one egg and tuna baguette to share which were actually both

very nice.
We had a lovely day on the beach, sat in our usual spot. The sea was lovely, the temperature seemed a tad cooler although we did spend quite a bit of time sitting under the umbrella. The sea itself was like a millpond and it was so hazy you couldn’t see where the sea and the sky met. It was very strange but all of a sudden the sea became slightly turbulent, producing waves which were quite big and came crashing into the beach. We wondered if it was due to the effect of an earth tremor somewhere else in Greece so we googled it but there didn’t seem to be any recorded. Then we thought it could be something to do with the pull of the new moon arising, although we’re getting a bit out of our depth now. We’ll just put it down to one of those unexplained phenomenons and leave it at that.

As always we had a nice relaxing day on the beach albeit most of the time we were huddled under the shade given off by the umbrella. We left the beach at 2.30pm more or less in line with the ferry leaving and popped into the nearest mini-market for some provisions which just happened to be the one where we were looking for the fork handles citronella candles. Well, all we can say is that it was another ‘unique’ experience. As we weren’t getting much we didn’t pick up a basked so we went straight to the till and placed our provisions on the counter. Next thing we know the old chap, maybe he’s the owner, fetches a trolley and subsequently place all our provisions inside it. We thought he was going to take it to the till on the other side of the store but what he actually did was he went round the till we were stood at, brought the trolley with him and proceeded to take everything out one-by-one and passed our provisions through the small opening in the screen. Of course, neither of us could make eye contact with each other in case we started laughing, as we were both trying to compute this ‘greek’ logic. For whatever process and system suited him best we’ll know for next time. Lesson learnt today…..always take a trolley when you go round the mini-market, despite how many items you’re going to purchase! We even bought six eggs to boil as we want to ensure that we have learnt our lesson and will make sure that a) the eggs are supervised at all times and b) we shall set the alarm!
We had our usual afternoon siesta and then sat on the balcony with our wine and crisps and continued our rummy tournament. I hate to say this but Maice is still in the lead and won nine rounds, me only four and she kept getting two jokers which are considered as wild cards……I think tomorrow we’ll swop seats and hopefully I’ll start getting more wins!

We showered and got ourselves ready for supper. Tonight we’re going to walk over to quarter 2, explore the back streets a bit more and then find a taverna for supper. We actually found ourselves in quarter 3 where we found people queueing up outside the taverna where, on our first day they made us a Greek salad even though we were sat next in the cafe next door. It’s obviously got a good reputation so we’ve booked a table for tomorrow night. In the end we went to Fotis taverna just on the periphery of the rectangular square and had our cheapest meal yet, a huge plate of whitebait, Greek salad, vine leaves stuffed with rice and pitta bread washed down with a small giraffe of wine……it was delicious.
When we left we felt the need to visit the mini-market in quarter 1 to purchase water and yoghurt and also we needed to get our steps in to make the 10,000 mark. Back home we retired to the balcony to watch the last ferry arrive but by 10.50pm it still hadn’t turned up. We presumed it was working to a weekend schedule and with that we blew out the candles and made our way to our beds.
